Disc damage is it dangerous

Hi, This is my first post and thanks to all your tutorials and pictures, I managed to replace the swivel which was badly pitted on my 200 tdi. All went smoothly apart from putting the bracket for the mud guard on the lower swivel pin the wrong way round. which forced me to decide I could live without a mud guard.

During the strip down I noticed a patch of pitting on my disc, I have included some pictures, any advice on this would greatly be appreciated. My main concern is it dangerous, if so would it be cheaper to replace the disc or buy a second hand hub. Thanks in advance.

I would replace the discs, they're about £30-40. I expect the rough patches would eat through pads and you always want to err on the side of caution with brakes.

The hubs should be alright, but it looks like the vehicle has sat for an extended period, and then been driven again to cause the discs to get to that state.

I've also put the mud guard brackets on the wrong way round - so annoying

I agree, change them out. It's not like they're that expensive. If the wheel bearings look OK, slap some fresh grease in them and change out the oil seal, put them back on and you'r good to go again

I wrote a piece on swapping them out in my build thread in the "members vehicles" section, wander in there and look for "project rusty" .

Not a difficult job at all, the bolts that hold the disc to the hub can be rusted badly but with patience and good quality penetrating fluid you can get them undone.

Thanks for all your advice, will go with replacements, just another query, would it fail an MOT should a inspector notice it.

From the pictures, your disc is not dangerous, It is corroded and pitted but it is still appears to be serviceable,

I would be more concerned about your hub seal that has leaked all over the inside of the disc (and probably onto the inner pad)

Just in case you don't know, the bolts holding the disc to the hub need a 12 point socket, 1/2" I think.

Spent ages looking for a special socket :-)

I bought one for mine and it was 14mm 12point. you need a 13mm 12point for the brake caliperbolts on later axles, earlier 200Tdi ones had 6side hex head bolts mostly but as always with LR, they liked to mix and match

Me too, i just dont like to reccomend to other poeple if you know what i mean. i would use my own judgement for my truck, but not reccomend it to someone else.

At least there has been some oil onto it already, might help with undoing the bolts

Thanks again for all your advice and observations, will be ordering some new discs and brake pads, along with a couple of hub seals. While I am at it I will replace my brake flexi hoses (noticed slight perishing cracks).

Will hopefully get all the bits together to coincide with my next holiday ! Its always awkward when you need your vehicle to get to and from work. Has anyone got any views on Halfords thread locking stick, ( looks like a Pritt stick) is it as good as the expensive, miniscule amount of liquid compound in the bottles. On the other hand maybe I was using to much, might be cursing next swivel strip down.LOL

When you come to undo the disk to hub bolts, lay down the road wheel and drop the wheel studs on the hub through the holes in the wheel, having the hub in a wheel like this makes it much easier to undo the bolts without the hub sliding about on the floor.

I would also suggest that you investigate and replace if required the stub axles as pitting and wearing of a grove on the flange end of the stub axle will seriously decrease the seal given by and lifespan of your new seals. Also if you do need to replace them don't forget the internal bearing and brass ring that needs to be added to the front stub axles prior to fitment otherwise you'll be cursing the need to go to the shops again!
