  1. Not on a TD / 200Tdi. The one flasher relay does the indicators and the hazards - the hazard switch changes the wiring to achieve this. Do the hazards work at all? Ign on, off or neither? Do the reverse light and brake lights work? The only point the hazards and fuel gauge share a wire is where the white wires feeding each fuse connect, as they are (as built ) each on seperate fuses.
  2. It's a while since I did it, but it went as follows: 1) undo the pulley securing nut so that it is still on but right at the end of the thread 2) clamp pulley in Workmate so that alternator hangs down underneath 3) apply small amounts of 3-in-1, WD40 or Plusgas to threads 4) make and deploy beverage of choice 5) put a bit of scrap timber over the nut and tap authoritatively with LR special tool No. 1 (hammer) until the alternator drops onto the nut. Don't hit it very hard, as you can break the lip off the pulley and / or knacker the bearings, but it will go eventually.
  3. You just can't get the staff, that's the trouble Anyway - 120mph in a 90
  4. I would have thought that the easiest way would be to cut the hole out to good metal, "puddle" a strip to the "good" and then offer up a slightly undersize patch into the hole. Should sit flush and much stronger and easier than a but weld. (Puddle welding is cutting smallish holes back from the edge and then welding to the sheet behind around the hole edge - very strong.)
  5. Ahh yes, the great "MTF ate my gearbox bushes" thread of '09, I remember it well ...
  6. Is the white / orange on the car or on the radio? 8 amp wire is normally fine for this, 5A fuse. I don't think your vintage of car has a dedicated fuse for the radio as standard; if the radio already has one in the back then just take a feed off a purple wire, same fuse as the hazards / cigar lighter.
  7. Crikey! Looks like its been gargling washers or something. Never seen anything like that before!
  8. Nah, they're probably imperial
  9. 13.5V isn't "charging fine", it's just "charging". An alternator in 100% nick running at a few 1000 rpm should be giving you 14 - 14.5V. Have you measured the voltage accross the big terminals on the back of the alternator, to eliminate a bad earth problem? What reading is the warning light terminal giving you? if its more than 14.5V then as Ralph suggested it could be a regulator pack fault.
  10. ... and unless you like LOTS of spam don't post your email address* - the forum has a private message facility! * It will be all over the web in about 20 minutes' time, praise be to google.
  11. Fridge, I've googled and I can't find any really high current reed switches? I think the best idea would be a parallel piece of string 2m shorter than winch rope, so that when the hook gets too far away it pulls a lever and the winch stops. Would work with hydro and PTO winches then, too
  12. Err, congratulations? I wish this could have been easier, but glad it's sorted. Thankfully most of the other jobs you mention don't have wiring
  13. Defender: 1st: 3.691:1 2nd: 2.132:1 3rd: 1.397:1 4th: 1.000:1 5th: 0.770:1 Reverse: 3.536:1 You'd want to drop the transfer ratio from 1.41 to take advantage of the 6th on the road, if not you'd end up with a free underdrive ... might suit someone!
  14. <tongue in cheek> Why not just tie a knot in it so it won't come out through the fairlead? </tongue in cheek>
  15. Bugger. Back to the other world dmination schemes then ...
  16. *** GAP IN MARKET ALERT *** A recent thread covered this too, and someone suggested welding a strip accross the back and tacking on an old 1/2 drive socket. Strikes me that a bit of 20 x 5 flat strip, with a 1/2 square hole in, tacked on would do just as well?
  17. No, this shouldn't happen with a new motor, assuming that the self-park switch is also new and the wiring is correct. Was the whole motor and gearbox changed, or just the motor bit?
  18. Which model of Discovery? I can't follow the description above either, unless I'm missing something? You could do worse than have a read down this too (some of it won't apply)
