Stellaghost
Supposed to go yesterday but hospital phoned up and said this morning, so Metal now removed, would like to say it was a good experience....but I would be telling porkies Enough of that, a small amount of progression on my spare wheel carrier Some cutting and tacking together, in the lowered position it should be easy enough to mount spare wheel if the spare needs to be off carrier will fold into the vehicle and fasten up Tyre roughly hoisted into position will use a couple of spring bolts to lock swing away section one here And one here some correct diameter pipe will be attached onto the outer A section to locate wheel centrally I will then come up with something to tie inner and outer A frames together to make it sturdy, however, not looking at that as yet as it depends upon whether I can lift and pivot the spare wheel up without assistance. If this proves awkward I have a plan to incorporate assistance from the rear winch Regards Stephen
bishbosh
Looks good - other than runining the departure angle! I am not sure that the bolt on the LHS is going to do much - being mounted to the tub it will just get ripped out. I would respectfully suggest adding some rigid support that is mounted to the rear cross member: Perhaps a piece of box with a hard rubber pad on the top?
Bowie69
Or fit the bolt to the wheel carrier and have the keep on the crossmember.

landroversforever
Not sure id bother with the bolt at the pivot end. Needing to release and keep free two at once might be a pain?

They lock out if you turn them 90deg. when lifted. I'd imagined the outer lock pin on the carrier with a shallow ramped receiver to support and take the pin welded to the x-member as Bish suggested I like the empty stowage ability , very tidy. landroversforever
Ahhh that makes more sense! I'd forgotten they do them like that.
Popular Post Stellaghost
Little bit more done Pivot heavily tacked on, still some more steel to add Carrier now supports weight of tyre yes i know its not in the carrying position , this was just to see how much flex is in the carrier with weight on At the furthermost position from pivot the carrier dropped 6mm, I think with some internal bracing on the pipework I might be able to reduce it slightly, in any case I can live with it by using @bishbosh idea to give support Locating collars tacked on Carrier removed to complete welding and addition of locking bolts regards Stephen
markyboy
Another vote for the tubular carrier. I like the spider web design, but it looks/feels a little too 'gimmicky' Regards, Mark
ThreePointFive
Late to this, but while I can appreciate the spiderweb design and artistry, it looks completely out of place on this car and it says something about you that none of the rest of it does. Hard to fully describe... And I'm someone who appreciates both types of metal. The tubular is completely in-keeping and follows on the "is that factory?" head scratching theme. 1

ThreePointFive
Not quite that harsh! It's just a very specific look, it would 100% work if the rest of the car has touches that picked up on the same theme.

FridgeFreezer
I knew it jogged a memory... there was a truck called the Spider many many moons ago - a father & son entry to Ladoga 07, zero budget doesn't even begin to describe it by our standards but they had MADE this thing... not built, MADE everything from whatever they could find laying about and were entering Proto class in it. It was rough, but the guy had MADE the axles, the portals, the rims, the bellhousing (from plate), the centre-mounted PTO winch (from a diff), even the steering bars were about 5 sections welded together... we asked him what some of the parts were from and he just said "I don't know - I found them". Absolute respect to him and his lad. I think Stella would have gotten on quite well with him These are the only shots I've got online, I don't remember if I took more underneath it. 2

FridgeFreezer
Found a few more technical spy shots of the spider - looking through the album I was clearly on form as there's shots underneath some weird and wacky vehicles from the starting line-up, this thing being by no means the only one with DIY portals and PTO winch etc. I've included some of @dirtydiesel's spy shots too as he was clearly geeking out more than me on this one. Back on the LR topic there was a lightweight that was running a Pinzgauer-style central spine with swing arms and (I think) little portals but not a scooby doo what on earth it was all from. 1
