Better lights than now - ideas / options ? Please

Hmmm

Lights prob :(

Now its dark at going hom time :( I have a prob

Used the 90 today, this has the quality 1985 Sealed beams, main beam is like dip should be

and dip is ...well like 2 glow worms with a cold, hoples

With a decent 0-60 and near 280 BHP the lights (or lack of) are making things "Interesting"

in a vinyl wipe stain free seat sort of way :ph34r:

I did have a pair of Ubcle Jez's HIDs on for a while, Main was like daylight switching to dip was

kin stroll on where the ************ Road gone sort of way

So, what are my options if :

I don't want to rewire Headlmaps

Want waterproof Lights

Want really good lighting - without aqdding lights

No HID etc as they caused blockage to colling

don't wnat to mely my wiring :lol:

Options please ?

Many people have had good sucess with the crystal halogen units, with the +90% bulbs (or whatever is available now). I have a pair of 60w spots on the a-bar, which is great for road driving but of course does mean adding extra lights!

Sealed beams are more waterproof, but if you get the halogen units that are plastic then you can drill a drain hole in the bottom so the water can get out and not cause so much corrosion.

the LED headlights heredepending on how much you want to spend, they would satisfy the waterproof bit otherwise the crystal lens with standard wattage but brighter bulbs,

I've had crystal lights crack on me and they go yellow after a couple of years. The best lighting you're going to get from "standard" technology is a new set of glass semi sealed units with new 60/55s in them.

The Autopal ones sold by Ring are better than their price would suggest, though you get a narrower beam the light in front of you is very good, compared to other headlights I've used.

Wipac Quadoptics are amongst the most expensive I've used, the later ones had a plastic reflector and don't suffer corrosion like the early ones did, you can pick up good second hand ones from 1995my onwards. These have a much more complicated prism pattern to give a wider spread of light (hence the brand name), which they do-lighting up both road and pavement, but I find they are better suited to cars and standard LR products, use them on something that's lifted and they are a bit wasted in my opinion.

Most modern bulbs are made using the same technolgy as the "high output" types you can pay £20 a bulb for, I tried some of the Phillips plus50% in the noddy car only to find they were no better than the Osram units Nissan buy in as OEM, All bulb manufacturers use the latest Xenon technology so the only time you are likely to be impressed by such an upgrade is if your current bulbs are 20 years old.

As I've read recently that the MOT will now included checks that HIDs are not retro fitted (instant fail) then they aren't really an option anymore. I've been running some for a couple of years and found they aren't as reliable as they claim anyway and again with the noddy car, the dip beam is a bit better but the main beam is way too high. Nothing is specifically wrong they just don't work.

High power bulbs are just as illegal as HID IIRC in anything built after the mid 80s, and as you say they can be a problem with older wiring, in an older car any gain in light output from the higher current draw is lost because of the voltage drops accross old switchgear and junctions.

If you're going to keep dunking it then there isn't really mush of an answer, Quartz-halogen bulbs don't like to be contaminated and will fail if damp. I do think the Wipac have a good seal with them but it's not intended to be submersible.

SO, I'd advise trying some plastic Wipac units from a soft dash RRC first with new bulbs.

I vote crystal upgrade, its like night and day, (excuse the pun) I got a pair with bulbs and new bowls and everything for 30 squid (wipec ones - from bolt on bits), even if they go yellow after a few years, just replace them, its a no frills easy job to do too and cheap. they use standard 2 fillament H3 bulbs.

My TD5 has wipac quadoptics fitted - and I don't really have a big issue with them. I would imagine they are original (ie genuine) parts, so might be worth going down that route?

That's with bowls, but you may of course not need them :)

A mate runs them in his truck, and they are like having a couple of searchlights on the front.

Extract from the puff:

"These lamps can handle Xenon HID kits unlike other specialists who sell you anything without telling you what they will fit, we are the Land Rover lighting people.".

But they don't tell you it's illegal to fit HID lights to a vehicle not equipped with either an automatic headlamp levelling system, or an automatic levelling suspension system. Without one of those two options what's the point of paying extra for these units, just that they are '60th Edition SVX', and have a built in sidelight?

What vehicle came with standard fit 7" round headlights, AND a levelling system as standard? I can't think of one.

I note these cost more, from the same supplier, than the 'lights+bowls' referenced by an earlier poster at http://tinyurl.com/2wyn23u The lens seem to be the same, the only material difference is the built in side light, and the absence of bowls.

Nige-silicone sealant (bathroom type) is your friend when sealing up Normal halogen headlights I've done this for year's and not once after dunking have I had to dry out my headlamps afterwards, ok it's a bit of a pain when you have to change the bulbs over but even that's few and far between anyway's
