David Sparkes
so is it legal to fit HID,S to a p38 with air suspension then? Rob No it's not as the p38 is self levelling but you need to have capped bulbs to be legal Yes. The capped bulbs will be part of the kit you will get from people like HIDS4U. Whoever supplies the kit, I wouldn't recommend spending the money on those until everything else is perfect and you have moved into making changes for the sake of change. landy andy.
Crystal clear headlights @ £20 each, and 90% brighter bulbs from Halfrauds £20ish each but currently doing a two for one. Sillicon the bulbs in. No water in even after some major wading, much brighter than the standard Quads that I replaced due to broken glass, and still on standard wiring. disco_al
doesn't the p38 have big square lumps in them? what about keeping an eye out for a scrapper with a boy race stylee quad headlight system to rob
stravaigin
Hmmmm What headlights do say a circa 1995 P38 RR have ? Are they any good ? Will my existing wiring run them ? Nige ARB do a nice plug and play wiring upgrade (ARBMOO2) or run your own. I found this along with halfords upgraded bulbs made a big difference in my TD5, especially on dipped. I did have expensive IPF bulbs but found they did not last, replaced them with the halfords red box ones and happy days, especially with a trade card or 2 for one. just upgrading your wiring will help on an older vehicle. tacr2man
The biggest single improvement will come from a wiring change , fit relay near headlamps and feed thru alt wire diameter cable use normal headlight wire to switch relay I have a 70 amp hella relay on my 110 . I did this for the dip circuit as on main the other 210watts of spotlights come on as well , and when dipping you get the black hole effect as your night vision is gone from the glare of the main beam , this is a known common phenomenen in Australia whre you can be running on main for hours at a time (no other traffic) HTSH PS my headlamps are H4 Hella never had any probs with going thru floods or creeks
stravaigin
The biggest single improvement will come from a wiring change I have to say I agree, especially on dipped headlights! I appreciate from your earlier posts you are against this but without a good current flow and good earth you are pissing in the wind (this is coming from an electrical troglodyte ) but also from my experience

Mocha Bear
Nige-silicone sealant (bathroom type) is your friend when sealing up Normal halogen headlights I've done this for year's and not once after dunking have I had to dry out my headlamps afterwards I am going to have to give this one a try, does the silicone not degrade/melt with the heat from the bulbs? Mocha No it doesn't ,I've been using the Idea I had for at least 10 years, The only time I have trouble with doing this is when I have to change a bulb due to it failing other than that it stay's at it should
nicks90
ARB do a nice plug and play wiring upgrade (ARBMOO2) or run your own. i dont suppose you could find a link to that wiring upgrade - i had a search and couldnt find it. Just looking at upgrading my lights and that would be perfect in conjunction with better bulbs. I'm an electrical luddite, so a fit and forget product is the safest way of keeping the smoke in. Turbocharger
Nige - from memory yours is an early Ninety - pre 1985(?) you don't need E-marked bulbs, so 100W super-retina-scorchers would be my first stop. Don't use expensive halogen fittings for them though - you'll scorch the reflector on any of them, so cheap and replaceable is the way to go. western
Its a 1985, so whats legal - can I- will my wiring frazzle ??? Nige any higher than standard fit bulbs will frazzle the wiring behind the headlights, been there/done it when I had 100/80watt bulbs fitted. if you need/want to go more than standard upgrade the wiring diameters/current capacity. Range Rover Blues
If it's as old as that then fit 100/80s or go the whole hog and fit 130/90s. You will need to upgrade the wiring to get the best of any high power bulbs but I guess you know how to wire in a relay. High power bulbs will run hotter and are better suited to glass/aluminium semi sealed than plastic headlights. I used them all the time in my old Escort with no problems whatsoever. FridgeFreezer
Another vote here for crystal headlamps, decent bulbs & wiring, and a ~5mm hole drilled at the bottom of the lens to let the water out (lenses are polycarb so it drills nicely)
