Yeah, why not, I'd be more than happy to offer out the services of my A/T tredd'd 110 if it was needed, It's the greatest 4x4 in the world so it might as well :)

THey will still ignore it - don't matter how many sign it. Remember the millions who marched against the war in Iraq and banning hunting? Fat lot of good it does. Even the government minister in charge of transport (Somebody-or-other Ladyboy I think it was) dismissed it as 'nonesense'

I wish I was wrong but the will do what they like to raise money and motorisrs can all go to hell.

As it's cold outside and I thought I fancied a challenge, I thought I might try and make a progressive NOS controller for a mate (the NOS system is fitted to his LR...so there is the landy content)...

To simplify things, I could really use some sort of twisty knob thing that produces an 8 bit binary code dependent upon its position (i.e. full left would be all 8 outputs low, full right would be all 8 outputs high, with the appropriate bits in the middle).

I know they exisit...I've used them before, but I can't remember what they are called. RS isn't much help without more detail.

Any ideas?

Rotary encoders? Check RS #333-091 etc.

BTW MegaSquirt has a 2-stage NOS controller built in should that be of use - includes automatic ignition timing correction, extra fuelling etc.

Do you actually want 8 bit binary:

00000001

00000010

00000011

00000100

00000101

etc

or something more like:

00000001

00000011

00000111

00001111

00011111

Many CB's have a board which spits out the channel as 6 bit binary, or sometimes 2 x 4 bit BCD (Binary coded decimal). Some, however have three outputs - a pulse and two direction lines (increment and decrement) which in a previous life I used to control a stepper motor which in turn adjusted the air/fuelmixture on my SII.

If it's the first option, then you need a rotary encoder. I believe Maplin used to sell a rotary switch with 4 bit binary output however.

If it's option 2, just use an 8 position rotary switch, with each sequential output connected to the previous with a diode such that when an output goes high, it makes the previous one go high, whose own diode makes the previous go high and so on.

Well, really I just want a method of inputting the desired boost from 0 to 100%. So 255 positions is probably a little overkill on the resolution. 8 however, is probably a little low.

Looking at the price of the things (thanks fridge) I might be better off forking out for a microcontroller with an A/D converter and using a pot.

OK how about this: Maplin.com

£1.30 for 4 bit BCD thumbwheel switch.

You could use two to give 0 to 100.

Dependent on the load to be lifted, surely using a vehicle winch as a crane would start to lift the front end of the landrover up.

If the load is only of the order of a few hundred kilos then this would not be a major problem.

If you wanted to lift a couple of tons using a LR winch then having a pulley block firmly fasten to the floor in front of the LR before the winch cable went over a second pulley fixed above the object to be lifted would surely overcome the problem of front end of LR going up.

The LR winch is then being used for pulling rather then for lifting. Yep HSE would probably have a dicky fit, but when needs must etc.

Sorry i don't know how to put sketch diagrams on here.

Regards

Leeds

I did speak to one of the local crane/winch specialists - he said they test the winches on the electricty board landrovers - they have a SWL for lifting of around 1t however to test this they had to go 150% of the SWL so 1.5t - their biggest problem then was getting the front end to stay down.

Anyway - most of this legislation only applies to workplaces, so at home you can do what you want - just don't ask anyone to help and don't expect any comeback on insurance or anything...

Like most things as long as you are carefull it will be fine 'hopefully' <_<

Trouble is not all 4x4 owners endear themselves to other road users when there is a good amount of snow around.

I remeber a few years ago being overtaken in my 90 by a bloke in a Toybota Amazon down an untreated back road near Alton when there was about 5 inches of snow on the roads. As the bloke went past he flicked me the bird and sped of down the road at about 50 miles an hour which was fine in a straight line but at the end of the straight there is a 90 degree bend and when I got there the pillock had found out why I had been travelling at cautious 25 mph as he had failed to slow his 2 tonne tank down enough to make the bend and was quite nicely stuck in the ditch on the outside of the bend.

I was very tempted to leave him there as a lesson, but pulled him out. As he left some what shame faced he was heard to mutter something along the lines of useless jap tank should have coped with the snow as it was a 4x4, which implied to me that he did not realise that his inappropriate speed was actually what caused him to ditch it.

Pete

Know what you mean, I used to work with a guy who owned a RRC and would drive at 70 on the motorway in snow as it was a 4 wheel drive so it's OK.

Hahahahahahahah well I decided the snow was a damn good excuse so just stayed in bed till 9.30 and then drove to work as normal. Only trouble was the muppets who insist on doing 20mph down a clear road...........sigh..........

My boss didnt make it in all day...........that was a waste of time then............sigh..........

if you had stayed home, your boss would have arrived at work at 8h50. it's always like this

over here there's no snow, only a lot of rain (but just while going to work and returning from it, because at lunch time the sky was clear and the sun shined). if rain is enough to make traffic go crazy, i can only imagine if we had snow like you have!

yes but bless the muppets who cant drive, should have seen their faces this morning down a single track back road along the edge of the south downs. about 2" of snow on the floor, them being muppets & me coming the other way in a tri-axle coach doing the skool bus. i didnt laff much at the morons who couldnt work out that even if its snow you DRIVE ON THE LEFT or you cant pass people coming the other way.

drive to work was fun as well, took the disco down every back road i could find when i got fed up with passing the eeeejits doing 15mph on a gritted mainroad. ok i was only doing 30-40 not my normal 60 but it wasnt that bad.

second the comment above about the retards (my word) who put their lights on but never cleared the snow off them first.
