Popular Post miketomcat
In other news,It's alive. Head gasket arrived today, I've just finished doing it. Had an inlet manifold bolt snap on the way in bit I managed to get it out and found a bolt to replace it for now. I'll have to change it later though. It's a great tent we run a wood burner in there which is lovely in the winter or if it's wet. Ours survived force 9 up here a few years ago and a steady force 6/7 for the rest of the time. Mike Thats Awesome - glad you got the head back together too!

miketomcat
So the heads off again, it did get us home and lasted about a month before it blew again. This time it's stripped ready to be taken for skimming on Tuesday hopefully this will solve the problem and buy me enough time to rebuild the original engine. Looks like between no2 pot and the water way between 2 and 3, though the water way between 3 and 4 doesn't look great either. It will be interesting what the machine shop say especially as it looks like there might be a crack between glow plug and injector on no2. Either way it'll be going back on for now it's just how quickly I need to do the other engine. Mike

Those water way's are in the head and not in the block, if i remember correctly? If so, would it help to instant gasket them up?

I would be worried the instant gasket could come adrift and block somewhere else. I have been told of someone welding them up, but that seems a lot of effort for little gain. I am however surprised the gasket isn't just blank there but I guess it's a hang up from earlier configuration's. Mike
Bowie69
Yup, it's not water pressure you're trying to stop, but combustion -which silicone won't hold unfortunately.
miketomcat
I haven't put a rule over the head but the fact it's gone twice in quick succession is pretty damning. Mike
landroversforever
Can you have the crack welded up whilst they’ve got it to skim?

I suspect that may be cost/time prohibitive, but I'll see what they say. It could just be a score it's difficult to tell. Mike
landroversforever
Dye-pen testing would prove crack or score. I’d have thought if they’re used to doing head skimming they’d have the stuff
Ed Poore
JB Weld like Mo did on his block? As you say it's just a temporary fix.

miketomcat
My wife has just collected the head so I guess it was fine. 🤞 Just got to refit it over the weekend as I've got to tow a boat on Monday, no pressure. Mike
