ibex 300 build

It's not a written off block. generally its a new set of cam bearings, an annoying amount of time and some blue locktite.

It's relatively simple to check - remove the vacuum and feel in with your finger - you can feel if the cam bearing has moved forward or back - do the same with the lift pump and the breather plate behind the pump.

Worth noting the cam doesn't move forward/back, the bearings do - so measuring endfloat doesn't do anything

Worst case scenario it's an engine out and block down to the local engine specialist for a line bore - this is actually rarely needed

Ask me how I know

It's looking very much like pull this engine and strip it. Chuck the other in for now. On another side note the radiator is definitely leaking so need to replace that to. Any recommendations as the one in there is Ali (cheap eBay job) and I'm not that impressed.

@miketomcat I'm breaking a 200 tdi disco shortly, I'm pretty sure it has a brass radiator, I can take it out over the weekend and bang it in the post for you, it doesn't leak and looks ok from what I can see through the grill regards Stephen

Stephen, without doubt you are a very decent chap

Here here! The amount of stuff he's posted down to me as well whilst refusing some reimbursment is embarrasing. But I have ways and means now... :stirthepot:

Well the oil pressure issue definitely isn't getting better. :stretcher-smiley-emoticon: as this is my daily I'll drag the other engine out put the head back on and get it ready to go in, at least then I can rebuild this one when time and finances allow (hopefully before the other one dies as well ).

As for @Stellaghost I'm sure at some point he'll need something fibreglass making/repairing, now that I can do for him.

I'm good for the engine I think. The one I have tried to run away years ago but I caught it. Thinking it was turbo seals I put it in our 110 (when it snapped it's cam(same symptoms as the ibex now)), it wasn't turbo seals. I removed it and fitted another 200, then took the head off to find a blown gap in the head gasket between the oil way and bore and nothing else a miss.

I've ordered gaskets etc but need to drag the engine out of storage. If I'm getting that I may as well get the rest of my workshop gear at the same time. This means I've got this weekend to get the workshop ready for all my stuff.......

Well that didn't go according to plan.

So we couldn't get the down pipe off the turbo, easy fix just used the turbo off the original engine. Next go to fit the temp sender only to discover one thermostat housing appears to be BSP and the other NPT. That's ok we'll just Rob the housing off the original....... except the bolts are corroded and seized in there. One undid but wouldn't come out the other snapped off, I'll be drilling that then. Next can't run the engine till the oil cooler is connected, grabs the radiator stellaghost kindly donated. Oil cooler fittings are different, yay, TSD has an old rad with the right ones. Drop it all in only to discover the oil pipes now won't go in as they foul the steering box, I'll put the old leaking one back in then shall I.

Finally we're ready to start.. dead nothing. Find the cable that should be on the starter DOH. Now we can start it turns over and over and over. That sounds like no compression. After some head scratching and tea we check the timing and tappets both fine. This doesn't make sense even with one down it would try to start but this feels like all are down. Fortunately TSD has a compression tester 1 and 4 almost nothing 2 and 3 ok. At this point I have that sinking feeling we're going to be taking the head back off to God knows what. Before we do I suggest oiling the pots to see it the compression  comes up, both 1 and 4 do. Well bugger it let's put the glow plugs back in and give it one last try. After a couple of attempts (clearing the oil that's hydraulicing it) it coughs and dies. Second attempt it starts to run away a little so shut it down, but this is probably just burning off the oil in 1 and 4. Third attempt finally it runs and ticks over.

I've still got to fit the bump stops, replace the rad, put some antifreeze in and it looks like the glow plug relay has failed engaged but I've driven it home and it seems to be running nicely.

Not quite in the same league but when I snapped my first crank and went to swap a known good runner in it wouldn't fire. Was cranking and cranking and cranking.

Two of us who (thought we) knew what we doing double checked everything five or six times. Eventually we came to the conclusion it wasn't getting fuel and after pressurising the tank and all sorts in an act of desperation 2h in we swapped the fuel lines over and it fired instantly
