Hybrid_From_Hell
This could be a long thread time wise - Not as in the "Not a 10 day Build Multi anniversary thread" by Mr William Warn, more as time and money allow, which for me (esp now) I don't have much of either. The engine I have in the 90 is just going fine thankyou, complete with Megasquirt, but following a brief chat and call I took a trip out today to hopefully Buy (which I did ) a new engine. Actually its not new, but its new to me, and yes, its to go into the 90 What is it ? well, its totally stupid, prob worse on fuel than I have now, complelely pointless and purile, irresponsible re the environment and all in all rather silly and rather daft engine for occasional road use, but I fell in love with all the bags, boxes and Tea Chests its totally unneeded and unnessacary etc - I bought it for a fancy and a mad moment and because I could - madness in a V8 Stylee ...sod being sensible and normal A John Eales Triple Plenumed 5.2 Race V8 I don't recognise half of the bits, but some I do, these engines are mad and spendy, so this was the only way I'd ever get to have one other than shelling out £14000 appox + or - (yup you read that right ! ) Huge Big Valve massively ported Heads, Block - new and linered with special crank to give bore 94.04 and I think 91mm stroke so its a revver, Arrow Con Rods £1650 a set of 8 Omega Pistons with additional mods, a Camshaft I cannot identify (yet) marking say 1AD6 604 208 ?? , and a selection of bags of bits. It needs a complete set of liners, as the ones in there have wear on them do to contamination, from what looks like a failed air filter as dirt is everywhere in the air box, it was bought from whoever it started dying a bit withby by an enthusaist, but he now has moved to Classic Rallying, so thus was looking for a good home - cue moi Its completely in bits, but meant I could see whats what, 1st thing will be the Liners & rings & pistons & Crank rebuild, which will not be cheap. I am going to do this build thread with words and pictures, partly for those who are interested, partly to show what a tuned V8 has inside / needs etc, partly to show issues and problems and how to get around them, Show relinered blocks how its done etc, and also to show how to build up a V8 I will be also reffering to the "Whats the BHP" Thread, which sadly has losty its pictures, so hopefully this will complement it As for whats the BHP, apparently " around 340-370 BHP is possible - and huge torque" So, the pics of it in its very sorry state Happy winter fiddling for moi then And, Dave (From Ashcrofts) if your reading this, 0- no problems with my LT85 warranty is there Sir ? Nige OH PS - When this thread / engine is finally at the end of the rebuild it may be a useful thread for others - so at that point expect all the sarky / ribbing / p taking / chatty posts to be cleaned up to leave a tech article Nige

Hybrid_From_Hell
I now but : 1 - Where the fun in that - no struggling for months 2 - Engine + Full rebuild liners etc will be just over half that at worst (Maybe ) 3 - I like to have things difficult now and again Nige
Bowie69
My God Nige, you can be a numpty sometimes you know Wilfred (Nige's butler) : 'More power sir? But why sir?' Nige (pipesmoking toff): 'Because I can Wilfred.' Seriously, why did you feel the need to upgrade from 280BHP in a 90, on slithery tyres and squidgy suspension? Oh, and I am rather jealous you know

Hybrid_From_Hell
Update No 1 Long helpfull chat with JE Cam is his, not too mad OK for road motor, although he did laugh and mention "Madness" Matserrati Racers have rear engines hence they suffer from sucking in race dust which is like grinding paste, the plenum Trumpets show the covering, this destroys engines like this due to them behaving like grinding paste within, Pistons are fine, and the rings are STANDARD LR 94mm ones, although fitted to Omega pistons. Crank look fine will measure it for wear, will fit ARP Head studs rather then the nasty strech bolts (£80) ] Cranks and Mains are agin std LR Re Linering is Circa £600 with new Cam bearing and everything else look useable So far so good Nige

Hybrid_From_Hell
Tim Phelps' engine? Yes I belive it was built for Tim Any info would be good Nige
Steve Hiatt
If it's the last engine he had in his Mattseratti then it was a cracker (for a little engine ). As you have surmised it was expensive, going on rumour your estimate is conservative, and high revving. It's not a plodding torque monster, but certainly lively. In my opinion this is better once you have sufficient torque to make it driveable. As I remember it also ran smoothly. Allisport Andy bought the car from Tim and at that time it had comprehensive documentation. He had some work done to the engine, he sold the car to Peter King (NORC), who sold it to Ian Archer (AWDC) and it is now raced by James Tennant (long term AWDC) with a smaller engine. It might be worth contacting Andy and follow the trail, hopefully there should be full details of the engine somewhere. I can help put you in touch with Peter, probably Ian although I think I've lost his nummber and James if necessary.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Steve your a star I have had a long chat with Peter - who wishes he'd never sold it - but had to to buy a house What he did say which made me grin (and think "Oooer" ) was the Dyno Print out for this engine which he has / coming my way with other bits was - Um - "At the wheels" 330 BHP, and erm, 472 Ft Lbs Torque. Interestingly - he ran it on a quaiffe 6 speed sequential Gearbox - which gives me an isdea ................as SWMBO always asks me what I want for Christams Kin hell, the 90 is gonna fly - <cough> - he also mentioned..... 1 lire per 1 mile at 'chat' Nige
western
a quaiffe 6 speed sequential Gearbox - which gives me an isdea................as SWMBO always asks me what I want for Christams hope her piggybank is bulging full, cos that's gonna cost. for example only Quaife H/D 15G 6 Speed Sequential - Special Offer - Only £3700 + VAT from http://www.cbradleymotorsport.co.uk/gearboxes.htm
Retroanaconda
Best build up a stock of spare drivetrain parts Nige I like the fact there's no reason except 'because I can', though. Good stuff.
Steve Hiatt
I can just imagine the LT85 having a nice rest while you fit the engine, only to find someone is about to smack it round the back of the head with a baseball bat

will_warne
"330 - 370 bhp....": how sweet - it's nearly comparable to an LS1. Seriously, some nice parts there. I can well imagine it cost the sort of amount you've suggested - race RV8s are not cheap to build as the parts are expensive (not many people build them), there's eight of everything and there is a lot of machining work involved. Out of interest, does this new lump come with dry sump? I considered it for the fire breathing monster that's going into 'the thing' but rejected it on the grounds of complexity - I've gone for a really nice baffled and trap doored sump instead. Once I eventually build something I think it would be interesting to get a dyno day sorted out as there's lots of people who throw around very large figures and it would be interesting to see how they compare on the same dyno.... V8 Freak
I think a Dyno day would be fun... Nige in the high 300's and the rest of us playing around between 100 and 200 or so ! LOL Sign me up ! :-)
