tell them to just replace the pipe.

it's not like a simple fix like that can void the warranty anymore

if they won't do it- find someone who will!

My Pug has a 'unit-replacement' clutch master-pipe-and-slave-cylinder assembly that "can't be bled mate" and "must be replaced as a unit"...

What have I got to lose? thinks I and forces off the top of the master cyl. A cupful of brake fluid and some rapid pumping later and the pedal came back and has been ok for over a year since.

Sorry I've had a few. I forgot what point I was making here... G'night all

I haven't got a TV either - my landlady's got a plethora of channels through a box (Sky? Freeview?) but I don't get time to put it on. It's nice to sit down and watch a film sometimes but as for mainstream entertainment, there's precious little worth watching - Top Gear springs to mind.

As such, I haven't seen the Kia advert and from the above, don't want to!

I would love to know how to get any Linux version working with both my printer and my cable modem.....

Tried Linux years ago and ditched it.......simply just not worth the time and effort.

Get a current modern distro and it will probably do it all out of the box. Was there a several years back when it was a kernel patch to get the dsl modem working and finding 12 months later doing a fresh install with a then newer distribution it just worked.

It is interesting currently as while windows has been ahead on supporting hardware that with the into of 64bit and more recently vista that support seems to be lagging and does make linux a more viable contender.

Though if linux doesn't do what you want out of the box then unless you enjoy the mental mast******** then yes I agree, don't waste your time and effort.

My ex-GF got a good deal on her Sony camcorder at Jessops, they seem to come up trumps occasionally. I got my (admittedly fairly low-end) Canon from Amazon and have been nothing but happy and occasionally amazed at it's survival properties

Uncle swears by eBay, he got a very expensive Canon with loads of goodies from Japan on eBlag (it even had the english manual with it) for a hell of a lot less than any UK source.

Unit replace means you can't re-build, open, top-up, bleed, etc etc Bill, you just replace the whole thing - nice and expensive way of doing things.

On a slightly different note - I had the honour of inspecting one of those bluddy Mitsubishi L200 Animal prior to it's very first MOT. The vehicle has done 27k from new, never used off the road, and polished every Sunday. Both front wheel bearings are so badly worn that the front brake pads on the drivers side have to be replaced, due to the angle of the wheel, the disc on the same side has to replaced becasue it was scraping on the caliper body. The owner just thought that his brakes needed replacing.

Had a magic "wolf moment" when camping in Alaska.

:o I am envious beyond belief! :D That must have been amazing. My primary memory from our tour of Scotland last summer was visiting one of the nature reserves up there with a large Wolf area, we were the only ones standing on the viewing platform when the pack broke over the hill next to us, seeing a wolf pack running at eye level was truely one of the best moments I've had B) I made Dan stand there for ages and we figured out it happened when they heard the sound of a TD5 as that was what brought 'dinner'!

Hopefully heading to Alaska/Canada this year or next, but I know my chances of seeing them are minimal. Wolves have to have a serious problem before they decide to go anywhere near humans and if ramblers are the reason they don't get introduced back to Scotland I hate them more than ever! Sheep farmers though, I guess I can understand.

If you go to Alaska or Canada you will not fail to see wildlife provided you follow one important rule. Leave the main tourist drags and leave the car on the roadside whereever possible and walk. At a visitor centre there was space in the guest book to say which animals you had seen on your travels. We almost filled the page while every other entry had just one animal.... Dall Sheep. Funnily enough there was a group of them stood on the roadside on the way to the visito centre! The Americans don't like to leave the confort of their RVs if they can help it! ;)

I seem to remember reading in one of Jeremy Clarkson's books about a scheme put forward by an eminent scientist to reintroduce wolves to the British Isles. I remember that the thinking behind this was to reduce the number of car accidents caused by deer wandering in front of speeding vehicles which if my memory serves me correctly was around about a thousand a year.

<snip>

A piece in the 18th Jan. edition of Shooting Times & Country Magazine mentions the latest results from the National Deer Collision Project *which state than more than 30,000 collisions have been reported since the project began in 2003. I know there are plenty around here and often see carcasses at the side of the road. I gave up the shooting rights on a piece of Thetford Forest a couple of years ago due to deer / tick / control issues.

*My screen often freezes when I click on the results .pdf page via the DCP link above - you have been warned!

Would that be the Highland Wildlife Park? Haven't been there since I was a kid, but I can't think of anywhere else with a wolf pack like that.

Anybody know if wolves like the taste of mink? Mink seem to be a real problem recently, after the animal rights activists decided to let them run free - the mink kill more of the indigenous wildlife than the humans do.

Oh………there’s more to come yet……………

We have the 2.8CRD Ltd auto which is a very late 03 model…………. To be honest its been very good apart from the main stealers.

A big issue with Chrysler (not only the Jeep models) is that they hang on the component rights and do not release them to the aftermarket parts suppliers, so there is almost zilch that you can get from the aftermarket suppliers. Even things like brake pads are Main stealer items and at £146 for the fronts and £181 for the rears, that can get a little pricey. Although I have recently discovered after a lot of digging that the OEM’s are ferodo and I currently have the ferodo OEM part numbers ……. The price then comes down to £42 front and £64 rear.

The 2.5CRD is common to the voyager (VM diesel), which has been around a while now…….. the 2.8 is just a bored version of the 2.5 with different cams and fuelling to give it 160 ponies.

Ours now has 65k on it and the cam belt must be changed every 60k………. it was 80k but there were more then a few breakages. Unfortunately when the belt lets go it also tends to take out 2 or more of the injectors and even from the likes of the VM specialist these are £750 a time……… closer to £900 from genuine parts

Anyway, the dealer quoted me ……. £955 for the belt change ….. oh and yes, “it’s a very specialist job sir and very special tools are required that are only available to jeep dealers, and it takes 6 hours” blah blah blah.:rolleyes:

The upshot is that the belt kit (belt + 2 idlers) is £140 from genuine parts and I did mine in about 7 hours, although you will have need to have done a twin cam before in order to know roughly what to do for belt pretension fitting and final tension (I’m sure Les will understand this comment). The cams can be locked by removing the blanking plugs and using a couple of short 7mm shafts. Being common rail the pump is not important and the crank position needs to be known but not locked as the crank pulley is a split type.

The other common failure is the alternator clutch ………… again the alternator is a main stealer item and most aftermarket suppliers can’t even reference it from the numbers (the unit is Nippon denso) ……….. that’s another £212 from genuine parts.

The bottom front ball joints are also a weakness ……….. but that was a warranty re-call so I guess most will have been done by now.

Ian

Phoned DVLA today

and despite having proof (receipt of sale, and vehicle taxed since jan) that the vehicle was not in our possesion we have to pay....

they would extend the time if we wrote a letter claiming we sent sect 9 (which we didnt) while they investigated its misplacement! (no chance there then)

but did agree to a smaller payment of £40 by next friday

Lesson learnt, £40 to be paid next thursday...

This doesn't make me want to install Vista: The Microsoft Small Print - blow that for a game of silly buggers!

If I install Linux can I run windows programs on it or do I need to get new software? I don't use much (Firefox, Tunderbird, Bitcomet, GoLive, Indesign) but really don't want to have to ditch them for alternatives.

Do you mean Ubuntu? Used it but its not exactly mainstream.

Indeed I do my friend - I got about 10 disks of it (8 x86 based, one 64bit and 1 mac) Installed a while ago and it's great, use it a lot when just surfing the net, far better than XP imo but XP is easier to live with day to day.

Yeah thats pretty bad, but there isnt another bed to sleep in unfortunately.

If you just surf, write documents & general stuff, then Linux (Suse is the best non-geek install i have found) will do.

But if like me you use some windows specific software & games, then no.

Linux will run some (but not all) windows apps using Wine (an emulator). Try a linux distro, see of u like it. you can even make your PC dual boot.

Being lost in the post will not "normanly" work, but worth a try !

I must spend 3 hours a week dealing with V5.s doc etc, Under dual noticification (sp) it is down to the reg keeper to inform DVLA when you have no futher intrest in the vehicle, by sending the r/h top yellow part to them, and getting the recipt back in the 3 weeks !

I sent off 3 docs after scraping to them back in sept, got the recipt, and still got 3 80 quid + fines beginning of the month

I send the hybrid doc away for colour change, did not see in in 2 months, lost in post !! still had to fork out for a dulicate

Unlucky,

I sent out my Series 1 and M/C logbooks and nothing came back.

Contacted DVLA and got free replacement plus the originals turned up in the post late. :D
