muddychris300tdi
Hi all, I just wounded how many miles you do in your Land Rovers. My reason for asking is that I'm thinking of selling my two motors and getting one. At the moment I've got a 03 plate passat and a.300tdi commercial discovery. I'm a builder and joiner so the disco is used for work and when I'm out and about one my own as I love it and do about 4-5000 miles in it a year. The passat is really a family motor that sits at home most the time, But. I also work for a specialist flooring company and work abroud for about 14 weeks a year and I use the passat to travel to and from the airport or to a colleague's house which or both about 126 miles door to door or to any job in England. So I do about 12000 miles a year in the passat. My other half doesn't drive and thinks it stupid that I have two motors. I like td5 Disco's as I think it would do, work, family shopper and traveling nicely but are they reliable enough to 17000ish miles a year and do 125 miles sit at the airport for up to two weeks and do 125 miles home. Or am I best to stick with two motors. Please let me know your milage and thoughts. Many thanks Chris.
Simon_CSK
Chris I have driven Landrovers of all kinds for 15 years. Not having any other car. I currently drive a 51 plate TD5 which is a very good car and thoroughly enjoy. I drive about 20000 miles a year. Having only had the car since August I have put 7000 miles on it and it has been faultless. The issues I have is a rotten chassis which I should have spotted before I bought but I was smitten when I saw it and did not delve deeply enough. I have the obligatory leaky sunroof but once I have fixed the sunroof and the chassis I will have an excellent motor. I have had two new Freelanders a FL on an 05 and a FL 2 both covered largish mileage and were great. I had about 4 Range Rover classics which were good also. I would add that if you drive a car for the business you will not get the tax breaks, if you are self employed, that you currently get with driving a commercial. Having got the TD5 I am thinking about getting a commercial TD5 for my business and I can write off all the costs against my business and have a spare vehicle as well. I too am the only driver in the house but certainly see the benefits of two vehicles. Three when I finally restore my CSK.
pux
I do 420 miles a week to work and back and then what ever shooting I have at the weekend in a td5 110.
Guest
Chris, I used to do between 10-15k per year in mine for work without an issue, it's slower and the noise is greater than a 'normal car' but the drive was more enjoyable. Just one thing to consider is parking, that,s the bit that used to get on my nerves I would get to a customers and would then spend 1/2 an hour parking although I expect this wouldn't be such an issue with you as you are going to places for a day? Jason.
muddychris300tdi
I have had the Disco 7 years so am used to parking it in all types of places. My main concern is the reliability of a td5, as at lot of traveling is to the airport so getting there on time is a big thing, son't really want to be ringing the boss saying I've broken down again can you book me another flight. Adam001
We used to do 15+k a year in our 2.5td 19J 110...think you'll be fine!! I now do 12'000 a year with the 200tdi conversion.
jason110
Keep the passat, you'll be p1ssed off when the landy let's you down in the airport. I've got my focus for commuting, it's cheap as chips to run, I've got a 110 when I want to go for a spin or need to carry something dirty. mickeyw
I have to agree with Jason. Even the difference in fuel costs can tot up to quite a saving, esp if most if your miles are in the more frugal car. It can easily pay for tax and insurance for your 'toy' car. simonr
About 5000 - even that is surprising as work is 5 miles away so 3000 miles a year going to work. I have no idea where I clock up another 2000! Si
Deej
Keep the Passat: 12,000 miles @ 50mpg = £1500 12,000 miles @ 25mpg = £3000 The £1500 saving pays for the extra tax/insurance/repairs to the Passat. You then get to have two cars which obviously helps if you need dependable transport. Pretty unlikely that both of them will be broken at the same time. I only do about 3000 miles a year in my Disco as it's really just a toy.
Retroanaconda
I do about 12-15k a year at the moment in my 90. Logically the most sensible thing to do is to keep the Passat as above. But logic doesn't always win out
muddychris300tdi
Thanks for the replies, I think I will keep the passat for now and tidy up the disco a bit. And maybe get to a few shows in it.
Tanuki
I do around 12,000 miles/year in my mildly-tweaked [big intercooler] TD5 D90 CSW. Almost entirely on normal highways/Motorways/Autoroutes; some of it is towing either a big 3-ton twin-axle flatbed trailer or a smaller 'pig-trailer'. You soon get used to the noise. It's rather fun chasing salesmen in their BMWs at 90MPH on the motorways.

Nigelw
Have not yet completed a kilometer in my 200Tdi D1 But having an ultra economical Peugeot Partner van as my run around is a big help, you know this thing does 3.5 liters/100kms which in old money is around 80mpg!!! I drive with economy in mind too which helps keep my costs down!!!

muddychris300tdi
My passat is only the 100bhp tdi so I only get around 42mpg on the run. But its still better than 25mpg of a td5. I just love the look and sound of the td5 Discovery's. But like I said I think I will stick with what I have got at the moment.
godzilla84
when you say miles, do you mean driving or welding wire?
lbj
Hi We drive about 25000+ miles a year in the 110 TD5 year 2000. It has now done some 270000 miles Lars

jeremy996
I own an embarrassing number of vehicles but I don't think I'll be getting rid of any for a while. One Land Rover 110 CSW, 1989, rebuilt to really shiny with a 200TDi lump. It does 29mpg on a two tank system burning mainly WVO. I have done about 21,000 miles in the last year. One 1990 Eunos Roadster 1.6, about 3,000 miles, total value about £800, but great to leave at airports - starts well and too simple for parasitic electrical loads! Cheap to insure as a "classic", but not especially cheap to run as only does about 30mpg. One 1972 Morgan 4/4 1600, no miles in 2012 and overdue a rebuild. The 110 CSW is my work car and I am an IFA, so an old Land Rover is a choice rather than a necessity. It gets many, many more positive reactions than a BMW or a Merc, so I am a happy bunny. rick
Roughly 25,000km/year ATM and have run the Tdi for the last ten years. I'm a tradie too, the Deefer usually tares out at 3000kg with all the tools and parts I carry.
TSD
For 6 years I drove 30k+ a year, first in a 200tdi Disco, then in the Ibex (300tdi then TGV). in recent years my mileage has been around 15k, still in the Ibex, with a 200 Ninety as spare truck. IMV the more time you spend on the road, the more important it should be in something you like. My commute is about to get a lot longer, and I've bought another Discovery for some comfort, but I still expect to use the Ibex around 50% of the time. FridgeFreezer
Now doing 25k a year commuting, plus the odd 3,000-mile holiday outing and whatnot... car is a 2001 Freelander TD4 which does ~37mpg (more if you drive in a Christian fashion), I reckon they're about the best you can do whilst sticking to the green oval, but if I was the OP I'd keep the passat for sensible, always worth having a 2nd car to fetch parts to fix the landy! Quagmire
I reckon around 18-20k miles a year in my old 90. Runs a 3.5 on LPG so cheap by v8 standards but still not great when compared to say my wifes 2011 Polo. However I rationalise this as I would go mad sitting stuck on the a3 everyday if I wasn't driving my biggest hobby Having got the Megasquirt bug a diesel is probably out of the question but perhaps a nice MGB with a rover T-series or something in it would be good. Tinkering potential...
