miketomcat
After the crank pulley coming loose a little while ago. Then last couple of weeks a radiator change and a blown core plug on 45. Now it seems the 110 wants in on the action. I drove home tonight no problem then had to nip out. So jump in turn her over she catches but doesn't fire, try again this time there's a sort of clunk then she spins over very freely. Ok so that now sounds like no compression! I go out in 45 when I get back rocker box off, turn it over valves 1 and 2 are trying to move but not as normal the rest however are stationary. My conclusion is a snapped cam. The rest of this evening has been spent stripping the bits off that need to be swapped onto my spare engine. So of your bored and in Southampton this weekend feel free to come take the mickey out of me doing an engine swap in the rain........ Scotts90
I feel your pain...they’re like petulant children at times...show one more attention than the other and it’s not long in having a hissy fit! Just had to change my 200tdi engine a couple of weeks back.
miketomcat
I had planned to finish off the last few bits on the ibex this weekend. Mike

Escape
Too bad Mike... Best of luck getting it sorted quickly!
daveturnbull
There are times when you start to wonder why we insist on mucking around with this old worn out junk and don't just get a new boring modern car instead. But even those manage to go wrong from time to time, and are less home-fixable. I'm still waiting on the garage to even give me a price to do the focus oil pump. When it's done at least you'll have a nice sense of achievement. If it wasn't mothers day, I'd come over to point and laugh help.
TSD
So I have a trailer, a towcar, a dry workshop, all (ok most) the tools in the world, a phone for which you have the number, and several of your other dead cars already in my garden? What did I say to offend you 2
miketomcat
But the disco doesn't need painting. plus......I'll ring you tonight. Mike
Arjan
Know the feeling... 3 LRs & 3 dead at the same time... Bon Courage !
monkie
Sorry to hear this frustration. I think most of us have times when think for a moment about calling the junk yard to see how much they would be willing to offer. What would cause a camshaft to break under normal opperating conditions?
miketomcat
The engine has been past it's best for a while. It's always been a pig to start and a flickering oil pressure light at tick over. You know how it is no time so just keep fingers crossed. Mike
Jon White
There is a known problem with the cam bearings on tdi’s slipping. This is probably what’s happened, especially if you suffer with the oil light flickering at idle.
Daan
Sorry to hear. Be glad you are not standing in some Russian layby . One day you will laugh at all this! Daan
miketomcat
Well that didn't go to plan either. I had a spare engine with what I thought was a blown turbo. So myself and tsd built it up with known good bits off the current engine then swapped it. Eventually we got it running albeit on 3 cylinders. After much fiddling and a short drive we have canned it as also dead. I'm now looking for another 200tdi to go in. Hopefully I can find one and have another go this weekend. daveturnbull
That's a pain. Good luck finding another one, they seem to be getting a little thin on the ground these days.
Ed Poore
Hmm, I have a good running 300Tdi, only issue is it's gonna cost you £8k (cos that may or may not be roughly the price of an Ls3...) I do feel your pain Mike, suspect I've trashed my transfer box and really couldn't face looking at it last weekend. Found enough of a pause between rain showers to drain the oil out in order to remove the hatch. Worryingly about an egg cup full came out. Then had a two bolts round off, one came off with my little friend and an Irwin Bolt Remover. Second one (typically the least accessible one above the exhaust) completely rounded off. Then it started properly peeing it down so went back to the shed and will break out the grinder later. Satisfied myself by starting to repair a mates rock sliders with the TIG. If you want an extra pair of hands give me a shout and I can see if I can spare sometime over the weekend to pop down. Can bring the wheel nuts then as well. Daan
Have to say, I would stop swapping engines and just rebuild one properly; It will last you a lifetime.
miketomcat
Thanks ed I've got to find one first but I should be ok. Daan that's a nice idea but that involves a lot of time and money. I did a 200tdi rebuild for a friend a few years ago it took me the best part of a month of evenings, this truck is my daily driver so I don't have that kind of time. Turner short engine is £2000 with head and sump it' £4000 The trucks only worth £2500-£3000 and I simply don't have enough money to buy a second hand one let alone re-con. Daan
Yes, I understand all that, but from 27 years of land rover ownership, I learned one thing they're not to be trusted, or at least not too be trusted to get you to work every day. The engine in the ibex any good?
Bowie69
Can you make a good one of the two?
western
I rebuilt my 200tdi, total was £2646.58, still less than a full recon unit from a well known LR engine supplier, so I've saved myself at least £1700 & have the satisfaction of DIY. you've most likely read my thread too https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/101989-my-24-year-old-200tdi-rebuild/?page=
miketomcat
Daan I either drive a land rover to work or I don't own one end of story. I've almost never owned a normal car in fact I borrowed a disco 3 briefly Saturday it's very nice but simply not me (The subject of a normal car has cropped up with the wife). It's bad enough that the money for getting the ibex on the road is going to be used to purchase an engine. I'm not going backwards when I'm so close. Bowie the first engine has snapped a cam due I think to a spun bearing which I believe is a block right off. The second I though was a blown turbo, I'm now thinking it maybe a holed piston. To make a good one out of the two is work wise in the realms of a re-con but without the benefit of new parts. Mike
Bowie69
Yeah just trying to think of line of least resistance, at least to get you on the road. If just a piston, can you do that with ladder frame on?
Ed Poore
Bit of a trek but https://www.gumtree.com/p/car-replacement-parts/landrover-200tdi-engine-with-auxiliares-£500/1288037684
joshremlin
I feel your pain... I’ve just come back to the LR scene after I regrettably sold my old 300tdi D1 nearly 3 years ago. I bought a defender 110 (a vehicle I’ve always wanted) last Saturday, got her home fine. went out in her on Sunday and she spat the dummy out blowing the head gasket at the rear... I’ve done the headgasket on a 300tdi now to tackle the 200tdi
