SteveG
I think I heard/read somewhere that it's not advisable to paint propshafts, due to risk of putting them out of balance. Is this correct, or just urban myth? Can a coat of paint really cause that much of an issue? Expert advice wanted please, and if correct, how do you get them refurbished? Cheers Steve
Davo
Just a coat of spray paint isn't going to hurt anything, and it's what reconditioners do anyway.
BogMonster
Maybe on an F1 car but I don't think I'd worry about anything Land Rover make as long as you're not painting it with brush on bitumen. The actual weight of paint in a small spray can is pretty insignificant and if you apply it reasonably evenly, the weight imbalance is going to be minimal. missingsid
Neither my wheels nor my diy shortened propshaft have been balanced and there are no ill affects!
Lewis
I paint both props every time I put another coat on the chassis, and I just slap floor paint on with a brush, I shouldn't worry
SteveG
Thanks everyone, as I thought - and rear prop now painted!
Jon White
Neither my wheels nor my diy shortened propshaft have been balanced and there are no ill affects! Ditto. Never balanced a prop, nor any of the wheels on my truck.
robertspark
Balanced the wolf rims on mine just the once... there was a bit of complaint over the amount of lead used by the tyre fitters.... drove out and could see the weights flying off in the mirror... Popular Post landrover598
Make sure you use anticlockwise paint otherwise you'll end up with transmission wind up.
SteveG
Make sure you use anticlockwise paint otherwise you'll end up with transmission wind up. Does this mean that our friends south of the equator, have to use clockwise paint???
BogMonster
Does this mean that our friends south of the equator, have to use clockwise paint??? Yes. You should see the mess it makes of the halfshafts if you use the wrong stuff. You could use them for corkscrews
Arjan
What happens when passing the Equator going South ? Will this upset the paint...
Peaklander
Coast over in neutral. That should be safe enough.
SteveG
Logic would dictate that once over the equator, you only use reverse until your back.
Davo
It's a real pain ordering parts from the UK because I have to specify "reverse rotational paint" and it always costs extra!
Snagger
I have a tin of it, if you'd like to buy it. £200 per litre, but shipping is costly as it has to travel via both poles to be correctly magnetised, so that's £400 per litre. But I did put "4x4" on the label, so it's worth it.

ballcock
Can you still buy Tartan paint in Scotland? I heard the EU. had banned it because the Clans were arguing over copyright.

It should be here soon because it only has to come from Hong Kong.
