The V8 Porn Rebuild Thread

Recommended Posts

<cough>

:P

You know the rules Mr Barker - no driveypoohs = vapour. (not that it's going to help me have a truck running before you...)

It's going to be a cracking engine you've got there - true, it's not a Gen III/IV Chevy, but it's going to make healthy numbers (and it's going to give your drivetrain a hell of a hard time). Have you got the dyno printout - it would be very interesting to see as the torque figure seems pretty high compared to the power. I wonder whether that's because you're hitting the flow limits of the heads at around 350 bhp.... Not that you really need more - even in a race car, the high 400's I should have will be, frankly, scarey. It's going to faster than my Lotus in a straight line FFS  There's just the minor issue of finishing it...

Don't know 'bout stains, I'm still picking bits of dash out from under my finger nails! Seriously though it is proper quick BUT and it's a big but (no not the one in the drivers seat!) it needs respect or it'll just as soon as look at you come and bite your face off and throw the remains in the nearest ditch, not only that but it sounds like satans dog who's been poked up the derrière with a red hot poker and now wants you dead! Definitely worth the effort and I bagsy the co pilot seat at the first comp Nige does!

For just over two hours 10 mins I have read my way through this entire thread, it took two years to re-build and fit!!!!

You have my uttermost respect!!!!

I actually feel guilty as on Saturday I sold on the 3.9V8 with it's ZFbox and LT230 Transfercase, been gutting the Disco out in readiness for it's diesel replacement, shame on me but external forces at play and keeping the RHD D1 was not really an option anymore so it had to go.

Next one dans arrive` :i-m_so_happy:

Top work, MIG first, TIG is not so easy I know from my past attempts but it is fun!!

Whooooooo hoooooo

Decided I wanted everything proper

So - with a giant gulp I got the old V5

And made the changes to send off to DVLA

I phoned them 1st was honest and said that I

Had heard of nightmare scenarios with peeps

Having all. Sorts of nightmares - the feeling I got was if you take the time - give them everything they need - and tick all of the requirements it is

Still straightforward and will be fine - short track or

Miss the basic requirements and you'll be on a world of pain

At the end of the day they have the law on their side so it's either do it there way or just not tell them - didn't want that so

What they require

V5 on YOUR name and address

PROOF of purchase and provenance

Letter to explain what why how done etc

So

I changed V5 to show new engine number

New cubic capacity

Letter of bill of sale from previous owner

Stating engine number cc and sold in bits for rebuild etc

Letter from John Ralrs explaining he built the engine from new - from new parts bought directly

From LR and engine number and cc

Letter from me advising old engine number xyz cc blah blah etc removed and replaced by second hand 5.2 v8 bought from mr a and confirming was built by JED lease see enclosed copies of letters

And

10 days later new log book new engine number and correct new cc

Nice to know I have done it properly and the engine is legally on the log book and ad it should be

I am not the type to just "wing it" I would just worry about it knowing its illegal

My choice others I am sure will just not bother

But I M a happy bunny :0)

Progrees was good, but has a fews more tweaks to finish having had a shake down

work has gotten back in the way of a minor water leak, minor oil leak from one

of the Stainless braided junctions and a couple of other things....

oh the the water temp reads red when is only warm 4.0 sensor mismatch with 3.5 carb v8 guage :(

that defo has to be fixed - oh and the rev counter ...and ..and

BUT - it runs :D

I wish everyone did it like that. Or atleast a previous onwer of my RRC had done that before some one got it from the UK.

It had a Rover P6 engine but in document it still had the original engine number. With the 1/3-2/3 rule that we have here too, it make all changes tricky for me.

Nige - Is there anybody specific who you talked to or a web link or the like for more info? Phone Number?

Im in the same frame of mind as you, I'd rather be above board with the engine transplant than just wing it.

Had a few PMs on this so

I phoned DVLA after a bit of a chat was put through to a dept deals with Changes to V5s

Explained that

I wanted my 4x4 to be fully legal

I had heard that changing the engine could prove a nightmare

Know some peeps just keep quiet, and I wasn't one of them

Wanted to understand what EXCATLY I needed to do

what would / could issues be

Could they please help me ?

Very helpful lady explained

They are the law / have the law / can do what they want (in nicest way)

Peeps have to do what they ask of them, not what they think is acceptable

That DVLA is a system driven process, give what they wnat in the right format and right way and it will work

Give wrong / missing / incorrect / questionable info and the system will spew it onto a resolve process - engineers

report / VOSA / IVA etc

For what I was asking I would need to :

Be able to show CLEAR AND PROVABLE ownership of the engine

Clear = Documentary evidence of purchase with numbers and detail

PROVABLE = no question of doubt - now for me the "Engine Number" would not make sense for a rover engine

so

Letter from JED who BUILT it at the start of its life, EXPLAINING as such the engine numbering system, and that it was built

from NEW Parts HE Bought from Rover = Provable

Clear = Letter from who I bought it from, engine number etc

Letter from me EXPLAINING Rover engine XXXXX out new engine (see documents) numbver YYYYY In

Insurance company advised and accepted

Now wish to have log book updated please

Whilst some peeps might think DVLA are a PITA actauly esp maybe for LR owners they are helping us, your "Knicked" 4x4 is stripped

and a "Mate in a pub knew someone who had the engine I av bought innit and I want to disguise further a ringed / dodgy 4x4 by popping

this engine in and getting DVLA to then help me"

So by doing what they do in a way it helps us.

If you disagree then thats fine, buy you are playing in their playground, its their rules, and if you don't do exactly what they wnat then

guess what ? :D

So, hope the above helps

I would stongly recomend a chat and call, I gave the Reg Number during the call, and I would guess maybe a "Note" may have been

added, whatever - I KNEW what they wnated, and I did that and hoped I had gotten it right, if I hadn't then frankly it was prob going to be

my fault !

I know many peeps have scare stories / nightmares, but these are prob due to engine numbers spewing a flag on the system as not

being "Recognised" (ie like the insurance co I tried a long time back who said "Er I dont have a drop don box for 4.5 V8 I'll use 4.6

OK ? " er "NON" ) mine would have been a "FLAG" and problem without the explaination / letter etc etc

So, my advice is still be legal and tell them, however, PHONE explain honesty and FFS Listen to what they want, don't short cut,

don't evade, don't rush, take your time, and maybe knowing what they are expecting / wnat put yourselves in THEIR place and

ask "Would this honestly be good enough for me If I was doing their job with their rules" if yes do it if No then sort it 1st !

Hope this helps
