The V8 Porn Rebuild Thread

Recommended Posts

Just being nosey, do you know what sort of ecu was in use when the dyno outputs were done? Would be interesting to see how well megasquirt did against it ......

It was originally set up to run on a DTA engine management system so all the dyno work would have been done with that...

At some point it would be interesting to see what Megasquirt does by comparison but the results may not be the same if the tuning was done direct on the dyno and now Nige has it all going through an energy sapping drivetrain...

Although the engine is "like new" I think it's still using original cam and followers so there may be differences as the components age....

(Thinking to the Top Gear dyno challenges where cars lose BHP with age...)

I think the biggest test will be Nige's smile....

so after all the hassle, stress and fabrication - are you still glad you did it, or do you now think it would have been easier to get 340bhp by fitting an LSx engine?

THATS cracking Q !!

There are pros and cons

Some of the Pros are its an Oddity, something special, still a Rover V8 (insurers very easy to sort to 5.2 - unsure if I had a LSx they would have

been as non fussed - I know they are out there so can be insured etc). and it was cheap, very very cheap

Although it was £14,800 + VAY when built it was in a hell of a sorry state when I got it, it had to be - no way could or would I shell out huge £££s for any engine

however whizzy, so the fact it was cheap was a huge interest, and I knew I could most of the work myself, but some (liners etc) I would have to pay out for

Even so, the actaul physical money spent is less than £1000, plus a set of new injectors, plus purchase costs, and spread over months ....and months and

bloody months  so it ends up with my with a truly silly engine for really not that much money but VAST amounts of time

An LS1 I guess is £5000-£6000, my engine sorted is kless than half of that, and I wouldn't be able to spend £5k+ without a gulp, and there would still

have been much to be made etc. I guess the key thing is the 5.2 came up cheap, and it was the sillyness of it and price that made me go Ooooo :D

and buy it, and if someone had said "I have an LS1 you can have for £4,5,6K I would have said "at that price I'll stay with the 4.5"

Its more the fact is was cheap, there, a rover, and an Eales engine and daft that I went for it.

The other Q is "Would I have done it if I had known how liong and how much trouble"

And I guess the answer would be NO - it took FAR FAR FAR longer than I guessed, but that is hindsight a wonderfull thing

I didn'ty have hindsight, bought it went through hell and back getting it going and as such am still smiling and am dead chuffed I have it

looking forward to using it and enjoying it - so maybe hindsight is not always the best thing to have !!

Another issue with any "foreign" engine is that it doesn't bolt in - you can land a good used LSx for ~£2k but you then need a gearbox, and to attach it to a transfer box, and although it's all available/doable it's not all available next-day over the parts counter from LR which does make a fair difference for maintenance.

I think the other difference between an RV and an LS.... is the LS starts at 350bhp before being tinkered with...the RV8 finishes at this.

I fully respect Nige for this build, but personally I would have gone down the LS route.

Re choice of engine:

Spares - This engine is a special as far as I can tell. Therefore spares will be just as hard to find (or more) as they will be for a LSx.

Why not/It was a challenge - I fully respect the effort and workmanship that has gone into this. Lots of people do lash ups that kind of work but are not reliable and never will be. From what has been posted this appears to be an impressive effort to properly fit an engine and engineer well thought out solutions to issues identifed. Not only that new skills have been mastered along the way. I'd be well chuffed to have achieved this. The sense of achievement, pride in a job well done and the learning experience is justification on it's own in my book.

Given that I am not aware of Nigel competing, then the difference in HP is irelavent in this context.

I cant see more power than this will be beneficial in any competition other than 'lasting less than half an hour before it breaks' type competition.

It is a different engine than most, and given that Nigel has a bussines mainly involving rover v8s, makes total sense.

Parts of it are special, but things like oil seals, water pump, belts, etc. are all off-the-shelf from LR. Yes the plenum is unobtainium, but those don't break very often!

Hmmm

Found the fuel leak  - NEVER EVER use low pressure fuel hose on a High Pressure system as prev twonk has

tried, this was sticky - and behaving like a soaker hose !

Next was to bring the tickover down, a second throttle sring (nneded for competuiton anyway) was made

by tigging some scrap bits of a 4.0 linkage
