simonpelly
Hi Folks, Looks like it is time to replace the rear shock absorbers on our 1997 110 Defender 300 Tdi The shocks seem to be categorised as with or without self levelling suspension. Not really understanding what is meant by "self levelling suspension" and whether we have this fitted. Thanks, Simon...
simonb
Do you have a conventional A frame ball joint on the rear axle, or is there what looks like a big hydraulic damper between the A frame and the chassis ? The latter is the self levelling unit.
western
IIRC 300TdI county didn't have levelled suspension, If it does have the Boge strut it looks like this
simonpelly
Thanks for the replies. Just taken a picture of the "under carriage" Does this help answer the question? And for the keen eyed - yes the propshafts and fuel tank are not present 🙂 So much to put back!!! paime
Looking shiny! That is indeed self levelling suspension you have. Quite rare I think.
Retroanaconda
Rare to find one still in working order, certainly! They are very effective, and much nicer to drive than the later 110s with progressive springs. Sadly most have stopped working many years ago
Troll Hunter
My 1991 110CSW has the Boge kit and as far as I know it is still working. When my rebuild is finished I'll have to try to assess its effectiveness, but I'm not sure how! Mike
western
Yep, that's the Boge strut, good to know it still works, my '89 110 strut died years ago.

Mike The test, iirc, from the factory manual was measure ride height, then load it up with 300Kg in the back and go for a drive, then re-measure ride height, it should be the same as before. Troll Hunter
Thanks, Bowie69. All I've got to then is find a couple of fat friends. That shouldn't be too difficult! Mike
simonpelly
Hi Folks, Thanks for confirming. Can't comment as to whether it's actually working. Will need to check that once start getting bits back on again. Finding myself taking more and more off. Running out of labelled cardboard boxes. In any case, off to order some new shocks. Thanks, Simon...

I was under the impression the strut was discontinued when the later (Td5 era) axle came in. I could be wrong...
Sigi_H
I have two of them at home in my workshop. Unfortunately one can't get any information about it. Anyway i'd like to repair them some day.
western
I'm sure one of our members tried to get one or 2 Boge struts repaired, his post is in Defender forum somewhere, it was a couple of years ago.

That was an interesting topic. Mine still works fine but little chance of finding a replacement if it goes.
reb78
I tried to get mine reconditioned. It spat all of its oil out after it had been opened. I gave up and fitted progressive springs. The thread is on here somewhere. I gave the two struts I had away to another member who was convinced he could successfully get them working. Haven't seen him on here since. landroversforever
It's crazy money for a refurbed one, but Kingley Cars in Oxfordshire do re-manufactured ones. £1950+VAT

That said if they can recon them then they should be able to do the 110 ones. This was the thread where I tried to get mine reconditioned. https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/77667-self-leveling-unit-repair/

landroversforever
I've still got ideas at the back of my head for using a small air spring there on some home-brew mounts. Not thought it through that much yet.
