Stainless exhausts - recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi folks.

Having experienced the rusty, scabby woes of a Double-S (supposedly) stainless exhaust a couple of decades ago, I’m looking for recommendations for a manufacturer of a decent exhaust for my RRC, one that won’t look like a barnacled mess within a few years.  If anyone has had positive experiences, please say with whom!

I think a custom fabricated exhaust would be the best option. Nothing sold in a comic is going to be top notch.

Agreed, off the shelf stuff is horrid, as I am sure @ThreePointFive will corroborate.

If you want a REALLY nice one, try a motorsport specialist with decades of experience, they will be able to make what you want.

Longlife can be good, but varies by garage in my experience.

Checking basic details before completing this reply, I see JP Exhausts have relocated from Macclesfield to Congleton, this move postdates my business with them, but I'm still happy to recommend them.
The major purchase (one of three) was a complete, and slightly customised, system for a 1995 38A diesel engined Range Rover. This wasn't a stock design for them, so they required the vehicle for the day. Times were different then, I was happy to occupy the waiting time with for a long walk along the canal.

The design was neat, with no stressed hanger positioning to cause premature failures of the rubber rings used. There were no failures of any sort.

I later understood they made the 'factory' exhausts for TVR.

Regards.

I have a Griffin exhaust on a Defender. No problem with it except it has slip joints rather than flanges, getting it off may be harder, though I haven't  used any jointing paste, and there is no corrosion so it might be ok. And not stupidly loud

Well I had what Snagger's trying to avoid: Double S (Super Sh*t?). It's a shame as they're a local company but they really don't care about quality. The silencer is good but other than that, it looks like a mild steel exhaust and it did not fit correctly out the box.

@FridgeFreezer was talking about a good experience on his. I've also heard/seen that Demand Engineering are good, they used to be on one of the LR forums just posting like normal people before it took off big time.

I have a Demand exhaust for the M57. Apparently they're made in Heaven by God himself. The fit off the shelf was perfect, taking 30 minutes on my back on the drive, the welding second to none, the bends mandrel bent and the shininess exquisite.

Quite simply a stainless steel orgasm !

Another thumbs down for double SS - really poor quality and expensive for what you get.

I'd vote get custom made - my 200tdi 90 I got done by Powerflow down in Southampton - its a thing of beauty - its bells and whistles V clamp connections 2,5" with all the standard size boxes on with a final 3" end piece and its fully TIG welded, it looks so pretty and it cost about £800.

I just had the exhaust re-built on the D2 at Stainless Steel creations up here in Falkirk, 2.5" with V clamp connections with sports CAT and big standard boxes cost £1100.

I'm not planning on changing either of the exhausts out again.

The one exception to the above is that I installed a kit from Alive tuning for a Td5 90, and it went on perfectly and I was pretty impressed with the quality, I cant remember who they use. (I think it might have been Demand too....)

+1 for the V-band clamps, I saw them on Daan's exhaust and found some cheapies on eBay, they are a bit of a faff to get lined up laying on your back but they do make dropping a section out & refitting it MUCH easier.

I can also highly recommend J P Exhausts https://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/ they will make whatever you require.

The downside is you need to take the vehicle to them, they make it on the vehicle or will copy whatever is already there.

Also worth noting they come with a lifetime guarantee so they might not be the cheapest but when I last visited there was a gentleman there who had driven all the way from Yorkshire. He had an old Mercedes saloon that the exhaust had been on for 5 years and a weld had cracked on one of the mountings (Not even failed completely, although I guess it might if it had been left), they not only sorted it but added some additional strength so it wouldn't happen again in the future.
They took the time to show him what had been done and made sure he was happy before he left.

I personally thought that was pretty good service.

I have a Double S system on my 110 200tdi, had to replace the rear box once as the weld from front face to pipe gave up & I replaced the centre box with a straight through pipe about 10 years ago, otherwise for my needs it's been fine.

I have a Double S tail pipe section on my Disco, with a really nice Phoenix resonator delete section. The Double SS section has lasted amazingly well as it's the thinnest stainless I have eve come across. But' bends reduce the flow from a generous 2.5" to a mean 2.25" which I find annoying, yet not annoying enough
