western
different internal structure Nige on a Td5 bonnet. Td5 bonnet picture velow all pre td5 bonets have the same internal frame as your existing bonnet. AFAIK thats the only difference.
Boris113
Having bought a TD5 bonnet recently, they are definitely lighter. They also have a different bonnet prop IIRC
western
one piece prop as in the photo above & same as used on bonnets with a spare wheel/tyre fitted,
Jon White
It'll all be to do with these "repair sections" you've welded to yours nige......
landroversforever
If you end up weighing them both, I would be interested to know the weight difference.
GW8IZR
Which one hurts most when it lands on the back of your neck when filling washer bottle?
Scotts90
There's a good few kilos between them...will see if I can weigh the old one later tonight. The td5 one I just fitted is much easier to handle.
Scotts90
13.9kg on my old bonnet
Happyoldgit
Yep, Td5 bonnets are lighter as they have a pressed interior support structure so lack the interior framework of the earlier versions, Puma bonnets are made from pressed steel. tacr2man
IIRC the pre defender bonnets are also thicker gauge birmabright
Hybrid_From_Hell
Ah ha ! Ok Mine is 1985...ali skin on top and a stick on H sort of strengthening gunbind underneath... This H Frame could be removed...czn some kind person describe the Td5 underneath and how fixed... Having done some serious googling and Australian american forums trawling I have a plan to msybd have 5" x 24 louvres punched into rear centre ish section. Wjll need to strip / repaing bonnet so deciding mine or td5..... Nige
missingsid
Looking at the photo above, if you put the holes near the centre then the later bonnet might not need anything removing first? Presumably later bonnets are no good for standing on? Marc
Scotts90
The td5 frame is riveted along the outer fold of the bonnet skin - front, sides and along the back. Mine also appears to have a token gesture of sikaflex/tiger seal around the centre brace. Front: Side: Rear and token sealant: I wouldn't like to stand on it! Happyoldgit
I wouldn't want to stand on a Td5 bonnet without the addition of some "machismo extreme 4x4 off road expedition challenge" chequer plate As for standing on Puma bonnets there's some real pretty chequer plate pressings available that cover the whole of the bonnet which are really, really nice ...no really ever-so nice Nige, I've removed the skin from the frame of pre Td5 bonnets in the past which makes working the skin itself easy peasy. oneandtwo
one piece prop as in the photo above & same as used on bonnets with a spare wheel/tyre fitted, The td5 prop is totally different from earlier one piece prop. The td5 one fits on a bracket on the offside wing and when not in use clips across the radiator frame /slam panel into a bracket on the near side wing. The earlier tdi one pice prop is much stronger and clips up into the bonnet itself.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Could some very kind person give the the length of the red line in millimeteres please ?? ie back edge of bonnet to start of the strengtheing ? Nige
tacr2man
You only have to take a look at the front edge of the bonnet to see what load landrover envisaged them taking , the early bonnets have 4 rubber blocks mounted on brackets to sit on the front grill closing panel , as opposed to the two anti rattle buffers fitted on the td5 bonnet. simonr
It'll all be to do with these "repair sections" you've welded to yours nige...... Jon - strangely, that's what I was thinking too!
Scotts90
425mm from back of bonnet to strengthening flanged edge

Bowie69
So you're going for the 'scooby' look then?
V8 Freak
Nige, If you make the scoop work backwards with heat venting towards the screen, you will blast the hot air out over the screen and help keep the washers defrosted in the winter.... Coat, hat... Gone.....
Bowie69
Yep... but you will need a heated screen to stop it from misting up when splashing about in puddles on the OUTSIDE then too
gonewestnz
I suspect original heavy bonnet is to support spare wheel mounting option when the td5 was produced I guess the bean counters at LR saw an opportunity to save some material cost as the fashion for bonnet mounted spare had diminished and so they could lighten the construction.
