Spitting Feathers with NFU Insurance

They wanted me to pay £200 more this year for the same cover so I have taken my business elsewhere.

The reasons behind the rise that NFU cited to me were:

The premium increases this year are due to a number of changes the NFU Mutual have made this year which are : -

* The Government have increased the Insurance premium Tax to 6%.

* The Mutal bonus on the policy was doubled for last year as it was NFU Mutual's centenary year (your bonus was 18% in 2010 and is 10% this year).

* The Underwritters have revised all rating factors used on our policies including postcodes and vehicle types as well as taking in to account large personal injury claims that are now common, this has lead to increases in the majority of our policies.

Hi Steve, yes same Bury office. They also cited mutual bonus was 2x last year, when I pointed out that didn't account for all of the £500+ increase they then said about 4x4/SUV's going up.

It's a shame, as Blackwells are very easy to deal with and I'd be happy to keep my business with them if the rise had been reasonable, but at this level it's ridiculous.

Cheers

Steve

Hi all.

Has no one any ideas on how we can sort this out or what can be done? (If any thing) :(

Can all of us let others know where we are finding cheaper quotes.

I am sure it would be a big help to others.

There does seem to be quite a number out there.

It,s worse in NI. :( If that's any consultation :(

Like you say Steve Blackwells have always offered excellent and prompt service and as much as I prefer to support local enterprise you have to draw a line somewhere. I thought about ringing the Johnson branch at Diss but as the increases appear to be across the union I doubt they could match the sort of quotes I've obtained elsewhere.

Who have you decided to go with in the end? I had so much trouble getting people to quote on my 110 - some minor mods and 12 seats, with the latter being the biggest issue, that i had to stay with NFU.

LV, and after a bit of explaining they even seemed to understand the meaning of RAI / snorkel, steering guard etc. Bear in mind I'm the wrong side of half a century and have been driving since I was 17, full NCB, more than one vehicle etc. I still have a week before the policy kicks in so may look around and dig a bit deeper.

Well, I can add mine to the list - last year we were paying around £900 for two vehicles, including paying in installments. Renewal quote? £1,800...

Apparently their underwriters have rezoned our postcode (we're in the Birmingham suburbs, so it's not exactly agricultural heartland - but neither is it Nechels). And what fire-breathing, V8, mud-tyred custom monsters would that be for? Erm... a honda civic and a peugeot 307. Both bog standard diesel euroboxes. Both in our mid-thirties, clean records (barring a no-fault accident last year for Erica), and I'm an IAM member.

Did a bit of shopping around and got them both covered for about £1150 all in (which still hurts, but by the time you put installments on the NFU quote it's pretty much £2,000).

Shame, as I've been with the NFU for years - the Thirsk office were really easy to deal with.

my 110 is insured with NFU, has been for the last 15 years, it was originally a 12 seater, but I reduced it to 5 for the work I wanted to use it for, been no problem, I'll find out if my premium rises when my renewal is due at the end of August.

got my renewal for next year, I'll be staying with NFU, a slight increase but not excessive.

My renewal came today. It has gone up - it was £360 and its now £450, so that's a 25% increase.

I expected worse - a friend who works in insurance said most people would see an across the board increase of 30% in their insurance costs - plus I've had a claim.

So I think I will absorb the increase and stay with them. Their service through the claim and it recognising modifications has been exemplary, so whilst I think I could probably get the insurance cheaper elsewhere - I doubt it would be the same product and service if I needed to use it.

just got our nfu renewal, ipswich office, gone up from £225 to £335,was told about last years double bonus, but for for fully comp on a 90,ifor williams trailer and a horse trailer i didn,t think that was too bad, plus they are very easey to deal with, far beter than tesco who our other car is with!!interestingly our 17 year old has just insured his first car with the coop, they accepted a years no claims off a moped, which brought his premiun down from £1900 to £1381,that was fully comp on a 1.2 vauxhall nova!!!!!!!!!!!! and we all moan at paying £300!!

Presently going on the "comparison" web sites the cheapest I can get is £272 for a 110 county with LV.

NFU who currently insure the RRC want £355, so gave them a chance to match the price, which they couldn't do.

The trouble is, I know the people in the NFU office, and they have always been really helpful, especially with the modifications to the RRC. When I get the 110, it is likely to be modified in the future, so I am probably better staying where I am, especially since the tipper trailer is also tagged on to the policy.

When I get in range of the UK I will give Pickles a ring and see what they can offer,as I believe they are quite competitive.

All these 'old' people complaining about insurance!!! I would love to pay some of the premiums you lot are moaning about... try paying £1200 and see how you like it :P

I'm nearly 21, clean license, no prangs and my insurance last year was more than the rest of the guys I meet up with in Swindon!

If anyone feels sorry and wishes to contribute, I can give you my paypal address

Gave Footman James a call and they quoted £156.72 with UNLIMITED mileage, excess £50.00 plus other bits...Oh decisions, decisions!

Careful if you drive a 110 with 11/12 seats. FJ gave me a quote like that, but when i queried the seat issue, they virtually accused me of modifying the vehicle then said they wouldnt cover it - they didnt seem to understand that it came from the factory with that number of seats and as 'specialists' they should have known that. I beleive they bung most landies on classic policies too which essentially means you dont build up a no claims bonus.

Just had my renewal from NFU and it is exactly the same as last year. Flux and NFU are the only insurers out there that really seem to understand our vehicles in my experience.

Very true in lots of ways reb78 but in todays climate saving £250 plus is not to be over looked, sadly with everything

else going up I like others have to look at where I can save money, I don't have the luxury of "At any price",

The wife's is up for renewal too with NFU and she drives a 1995 Rav4 and that came out at £460.00, £20 more

than my Landy!!!.....So I am now shopping round to get hers cheaper.

You are right reb they (Footman James) dont do "noclaims" on Classic car insurance.....But as your "noclaims" are

valid for 2yrs. I get one years cheap insurance then I can swop to say Adrian Flux for a year and then back, a bit of a pain it maybe,

but still save money so gotta be good? Oh and i will keep my noclaims
